Argentina’s Andean region, better known as Northwest Argentina, has a vast and rich pre-Columbian art tradition that is hardly known in Chile. Cultural development in the region was complex, with different groups interacting intensely with each other, contributing to the rich ethnic, historic and cultural character of the indigenous Southern Cone. This exhibit reflects these processes. It was based on a major Argentinean collection of Andean artifacts and focused on the figure of the Jaguar, a feline native to the continent’s eastern jungles, and on pre-Hispanic art from the eastern Andes.
